Rothman Index
Rothman Index
The Rothman Index (RI) is a life-saving patient score devised by Michael and Steven Rothman after their mother passed away. I designed and installed the first system that automatically extracted the RI from the Electronic Medical Record at Sarasota Memorial, now a CMS 5-star hospital.
Perahealth , the company that grew from our early collaboration, has RI installations at about 50 hospitals, one of which, Houston Methodist, recently reported a 30% reduction in mortality since becoming a user.

Below is a screenshot of an anonymized Rothman Index graph. Two of its data points have been clicked to show the 26 vital signs, nursing assessments, and lab results on which each point is based. The red points denote a stay in the ICU. The label in the upper right gives the most recently computed "Mortality" or probability that the patient will expire before leaving the hospital, while the faint upper curve shows the Survival Probability (1 - Mortality) during the stay.
